I do not have the time to start investigating the reasons why
people engage in the consumption of alcohol but, I am only bothered about the
health implications. This is because, whether your motive for consuming alcohol
is to “drink away sorrow” as many people assert or just as a way to socialize,
the only thing I know is that, the risk factors associated with alcohol do not
understand these motives. Alcoholic drinks have continued to enjoy great boom
in Nigeria as the business is today growing faster than the oil and telecommunication
industry. With many brand hitting the market daily and even in cheaper packages,
a catastrophic future looms in the nation.
From my findings, some of the potential risks associated with alcohol
consumption include the following.
1.
Alcohol interferes with your
immune system. What this
means is that, alcohol reduces the ability of your body to fight off disease
and infection. Your immune system is like soldiers positioned in your body by
your creator to help fight external attacks such as viruses and infections that
we encounter daily from our environment. As you continue intake of alcohol, you
might be enjoying it but something terrible is happening in your body. Once your
immune system is weakened, your body becomes vulnerable to harmful attacks and diseases.
2.
Alcohol Damages the liver: Our livers are essential when it
comes to proper food digestion, nutrient absorption, controlling infections,
and ridding the body of toxins. It is a pity that we do not have statistics of
liver related diseases and mortalities in Nigeria but in USA, there are over
two million people who suffer from liver disease caused by excessive alcohol
consumption. For instance, Liver cirrhosis ranked as the 12th leading cause of
death among Americans in 2009.
3.
Increases chances of developing
cancer. Alcohol
consumers have a higher risk of suffering from various types of cancer such as
cancers of the breast, liver, etc.
4.
Alcohol depletes your glutathione
level: Glutathione
is what empowers your liver to function, excessive drinking of alcohol compels
your body to exhaust it’s glutathione level and this could expose you to
diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, frequent malaria, typhoid,
etc.
5.
Alcohol could lead to heart
attacks: Over time,
excessive alcohol consumption begins to weaken the heart muscle resulting in
blood flow irregularities. Alcoholic drinkers are often plagued by a condition
known as cardiomyopathy where the heart stretches and droops. Alcohol can also
increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke, and hypertension.
6.
Alcohol affects Your Brain
Functions: Beyond
that initial feeling of euphoria, alcohol can have a detrimental effect on your
brain. By slowing the relay of information between neurotransmitters, the
ethanol found in alcoholic drinks can cause damage to multiple areas of the
brain. Prolonged damage to the brain’s neurotransmitters can result in
behavioral and mood changes such as depression, anxiety, memory loss, and
seizures.
7.
Alcohol Damages The Kidneys: The effect alcohol has on the liver
can also spread to the kidneys. Due to the diuretic effect alcohol has on
increasing the amount of urine the body produces, the kidneys are not able to
do their job of regulating the flow and makeup of body fluids including the
distribution of sodium, potassium, and chloride ions. This can in turn disturb
our balance of electrolytes. Excessive alcohol consumption can also lead to
high blood pressure, the second leading cause of kidney failure.
WHAT CAN I DRINK NOW?
That was a question a friend of mine asked me after he went
through google to research further on the facts I just shared above. But, I have
good news for you.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS CALLED NONI
JUICE?
If your answer is NO, then I want you to check www.google.com and search “health benefits of
noni juice’.
Most people who know about noni in Nigeria might be familiar with
the TAHITIAN NONI JUICE but today, we have a Virgin Noni Juice (none diluted,
natural without preservative) grown and processed here in Nigeria by T&T
Vigin Noni. The company’s plantation with over 23,000 noni trees is located at Egbudu-Akah
in Delta State.
It there is anything I will recommend you to be drinking, it is
NONI Juice because, it has no side effects, it’s natural and good for your
health.
If I may borrow the words of Prince Arinze Onebunne (CEO Jovana
Farms), “if you can drink yourself into sickness, you can also drink yourself into
good health”. Noni juice taste like pure red wine, it is natural, it’s
powerful, and great for your health.
