Chronic diseases such as cancer, stroke, diabetes, high blood
pressure/hypertension, etc are today the major cause of death and disability
worldwide.
According to a report by the World Health Organization and the
International Diabetes Federation published in 2014, more than 3.9 million Nigerians
are suffering from diabetes. Just last
year, 2016, a consultant cardiologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at
the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, Dr Amam Mbakwem, disclosed
that no less than 40 percent of adults in Nigeria are hypertensive. What this
means is that in every 10 Nigerian adults, there is a possibility that four of
them have high blood pressure.
She further remarked that, “the problem is not just about the
numbers. High blood pressure can damage the brain because of stroke; it can
damage the heart because it causes heart failure and ischemic diseases like
heart attack, and can damage the kidneys and the arteries.”
A recent report by Stephen James Stroke Centre of Excellence, Abuja
indicates that about 168 people die of stroke daily in Nigeria, while 18 stroke
cases are recorded every hour. The report also reveals that the rising cases of
stroke in the country are frightening with over 160,000 cases recorded annually.
In a related report, Dr. Ebun Bamgboye, Chief Medical Director of
St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos and member Nigeria Association of Nephrology says
that, about 23 per cent of Nigerians are suffering from various stages of
kidney/renal disease.
Apart from all these chronic diseases mentioned here, there are however
many other chronic health conditions and diseases that many people are battling
with today such as mental disorders, vision and hearing impairment, oral
diseases, bone and joint disorders, and genetic disorders.
